MOGON Intro 101 - Shell Navigation

Who Should Attend?

• Anyone who hasn't worked with the command line or shell before (don't worry if you are not familiar with these terms—we'll start from scratch)

Prerequisites

• No prior knowledge is required. This course is aimed at beginners.
• Note: Bash is a prerequisite for our advanced HPC courses, so this course is a good place to start building that foundation.

What You will Learn

This course introduces the basics of working on the command line for scientific computing. We'll start from scratch and cover the essential skills you'll need to work comfortably in a Linux environment. By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Understand the Shell
  • Learn what a shell is, how it works, and when using Bash can make your work easier.
• Navigate the Filesystem
  • Learn how the Linux filesystem is organised and how to use the terminal to move around and explore directories.
• Work with Files and Folders
  • Learn how to create, move, view, and delete files and directories using the command line.
• Apply Good Practices for Research
  • Learn practical approaches to organising and managing files that support reproducible research.
