DESCRIPTION: A Hands‑On Workshop for Students & Young Researchers
 – Managing Scripts & Code in the Life Sciences\nLecturers\nHelge Vat
heuer (IQCB)\, Jörg Steinkamp (ZDV)\nOverview\nGit is a distributed versi
on control system that allows all changes to code\, data sets\, or scripts
to be accurately documented and\, if necessary\, restored to previous sta
tes. This makes it easier to debug\, understand development steps\, and pr
oduce reproducible research results. GitLab provides a central repository
that allows multiple people to work on the same project at the same time.
Branches\, merge requests\, and code reviews help structure collaboration
and avoid conflicts.Additional task and project management features (issu
es\, milestones\, and an integrated wiki) make Git and GitLab the industry
  standard\, far beyond academic research.\nTarget group\nBeginners (e.g. B
Sc/MSc students in natural sciences and medicine) who code or at least wor
k with scripts\nPrerequisites\n\nA JGU account is necessary to use the Git
Lab instance\nYou can bring your own laptop (no tablets or alike!)\n\nAgen
da\n\n\nWelcome\, introductions & brief discussion of why version control
matters for research reproducibility.\n\n\nTheory & demo of core Git c
 oncepts (repository\, staging\, commits\, branches\, merges)\n\n\nHands‑
 on local Git workflow: initialize a repo\, add/commit files\, create and m
erge a feature branch.\n\n\nOverview of GitLab’s main UI elements (proje
cts\, issues\, merge requests\, wiki) and how they support collaboration a
nd open‑science publishing.\n\n\nHands‑on GitLab workflow: add SSH key
to GitLab\, create a new project\, push the local repo\, open and review
 a merge request\, merge and tag a release.\n\n\nWrap‑up: best‑practice
checklist for research projects\, resources for further learning\, and op
 en Q&A.\n\n\nLearning goals\nGit:\n\nUse SSH key (command line)\nBe able t
o use the most important Git commands\n\nGitLab:\n\nGet to know the essent
ial functions of GitLab\nBe able to create your first project\nCollaborati
on & backup tool\, open science (public project)\n\n \nGit and GitLab as
a start to good research data management\n\nhttps://indico.zdv.uni-mainz.d
