Who Should Attend?

  • This course is for anyone who wants to work with remote Linux systems, like the HPC cluster MOGON.

Prerequisites

  • You should be comfortable working in the shell at the level of MOGON Intro 101 or above. In particular, you should be able to navigate directories, work with files, and run basic shell commands.

What You will Learn

The course introduces the tools and workflows you need to work effectively on a remote Linux system.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Connect to Remote Systems
    • Generate and use an ssh key pair
    • Use ssh to securely connect to remote hosts
    • Create an ssh configuration to make frequently used connections easier
  • Get Started on MOGON 
    • Log in to the HPC system MOGON
    • Identify and troubleshoot common SSH problems
  • Transfer Your Files
    • Use scp to copy files between your local machine and MOGON
    • Use rsync to efficiently synchronize files and directories
  • Run Software on the Cluster
    • Get an overview of common ways to use software on a cluster
    • Use Lmod modules to manage your software environment
