Who Should Attend?

  • All new MOGON users. 

Prerequisites

  • Bash proficiency at the level of MOGON Intro 101 or higher. You should be comfortable working in the shell and navigating files and directories.
  • A fully set-up HPC account. We recommend completing MOGON Intro 102 beforehand to get the most out of the course.

What You will Learn

This course provides an introduction to high-performance computing (HPC) and shows you how to make effective use of MOGON. It covers the basics of running jobs on a cluster, working with parallel computing, and understanding the tools and systems behind MOGON. Topics include: 

  • Parallel Computing and HPC 
    • Introduction to the basic concepts and applications of HPC
    • Overview of parallel computing and its advantages
  • Job Scheduling 
    • Introduction to Slurm, the workload manager used on MOGON
    • Learn how to submit and manage serial and parallel batch jobs
  • The MOGON Cluster
    • Overview of MOGON's architecture
    • Introduction to the cluster's main capabilities and resources
  • Parallel Programming
    • Introduction to shared-memory parallelism (OpenMP)
    • Basics of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) for distributed-memory systems
