Description

Power imbalances are deeply embedded in academic structures and can create conditions in which misconduct and abuse of power are difficult to prevent, detect or sanction. This lecture examines the sources of power in academia, the structural and organizational factors that can enable abusive behavior, and the dependencies that often make it difficult for affected individuals or witnesses to speak up. The lecture will also address the measures that can help prevent abuse of power, including reducing structural dependencies, strengthening independent control and complaint mechanisms, and creating clearer rules and responsibilities. Daniel Leising will also discuss practical steps that individuals affected by acute cases of power abuse can take to protect themselves, including documentation, reducing dependencies, seeking support, and carefully assessing legal and institutional options.
